John Roberts (firefighter with Chaves County District 8 Volunteer Fire Department) indicates the heat index is registering well above 115 degrees. He suggests amending the Site Safety & Health Plan to allow for response personnel to wear perspiration wicking clothing underneath their Tyvek suits. Mr. Roberts would also like to generally limit workers to 20 minutes of work, followed by a 40-minute recovery period, to ease the effects of fatigue from potential heat exhaustion, specifically during the late morning and early/mid-afternoon hours. He also asks for each work crew to be provided with a heat index monitor, along with instructions to log ambient temperatures and heat indexes at regular time intervals. This is a Drill!
